Post Diagnosis

Within this series, I made paintings and sculptures which examine the traumatic experience of illness, medical treatment and the medical industry. This body of work draws from personal experience and is defined by the utilization of Baroque and Neoclassical painting traditions to create jarring images of surgical procedures, the aftermath of life threatening experiences, and the delicate balance between a patient's physical and mental health. Due to the sensitive and private medical information contained within some of his paintings, they must be redacted to comply with federal regulations and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The images often use materials such as syringes, scalpels, gauze, hospital gowns and other medical supplies as well as the more traditional materials of oil on canvas to inform the narrative within the subject matter.
